Blepharoplasty (Eye-Lid Surgery)

How long is recovery time?
There is some downtime required after eyelid surgery, and it is common for patients to experience some bruising and swelling during the first couple of weeks of recovery. It is important to protect the skin around the eyes post-surgery and it is recommended to wear a quality sun cream suitable to sensitive skin & for around the eyes, as this will help to prevent premature damage and maximise results. It is also important to remember that you cannot take any aspirin or anti-flammatory medications post-op.
When can I go back to work?
It is very important to avoid straining and lifting heavy items for at least two weeks post-surgery, however you will be able to resume most normal activities after about 10 days. Some patients are able to resume non-strenuous work after a few days, however patients must note that vision may still be slightly blurred, so reading and looking at screens may prove difficult for the first couple of days post-surgery.
Can I use makeup in the recovery period?
Yes, you can! Patients are allowed to use makeup during the recovery period, however if you have sutures it is recommended to wait until they have been removed. We also recommend avoiding contact lenses for about a week post-surgery as they can irritate the eyes and cause dryness.
Are there any complications?
Like any surgical procedure, there are always potential risks and complications. We recommend that patients quit smoking before surgery, as it will improve overall recovery and results, and subsequently will decrease the risk of complications. Risks that are specific to Blepharoplasty are:
* Excessive skin removal leading to exposure of the cornea
* Asymmetry of eyelids
* Prolonged dryness, itchiness or watering of the eye
* Temporary or permanent changes in vision, this is the most serious of possible complications
Other risks can include:
* Infection
* Bruising, bleeding, haematoma formation
* Scarring
* Anaesthetic problems, including Deep Vein Thrombosis
* Allergy
* Pain
