Liposuction is a surgical procedure that uses a suction technique to remove fat, it also shapes or contours the targeted area. It can help get rid of those unwanted jiggles that don’t seem to budge, those stubborn areas you have been trying to lose for years. Liposuction can remove as much as 3 litres of fat in one operation safely.
The surgery can take between 30 minutes for a small area to 3 hours for of a combination of areas.
Liposuction involves the unwanted fat being liquefied with saline injections, containing local anaesthetic and a blood flow inhibitor. Then a small incision is made in the treatment area so a cannula can be utilised, this method results in minimal scarring. This infiltration phase usually takes around 15 minutes then the second phase of is removing the fat and contouring the area, where the fat is broken down so it can be easily removed. The second phrase will take longer depending on the amount of fat being removed.
Our frequently asked questions are meant to provide you with a guide to some common concerns regarding our most popular cosmetic surgery procedures. Is this fat removal permanent?Yes, as we are born with a certain amount of fat cells and when that are surgically removed by liposuction they cannot be produced again. But this does not stop putting weight back on from overeating and not exercising as the remaining fat cells can expand.
How much can I lose?Fat doesn’t actually weigh much so you won’t notice kilos dropping off the scales but you will notice a change in your appearance. As we measure fat in terms of millilitres and litres, so in a day liposuction surgery as much as two or three litres can be removed safely. This is a large amount of fat and must be done in a hospital and also involves an overnight stay, which is more costly. Therefore Liposuction is not a way to reduce your overall weight.
Does it hurt?Majority of liposuction patients have said it is not painful, as you are given mild sedation which is administered by an anaesthetist which is like a twilight sleep. You may feel some discomfort for 24 hours, but this can be reduced with generic painkillers.
How long do I wear the support garment? After surgery a support garment should be worn night and day for the first two weeks, but can be removed for showers. Tight clothing like jeans or underwear (that are tight around the waist) may irritate the areas should not be worn for one month, as they will leave a line when the loose skin repairs or heals.
